Duragalv Hot Dip Galvanising
Many railway sector specifiers are writing the Duragalv™ standard into specifications as a cost effective alternative to products traditionally manufactured from stainless steel. The move is meeting the industry’s emphasis on cost effective asset management in hand with extending asset performance and embracing sustainable design of infrastructure.
Higher levels of galvanised protection are becoming a key specifying requirement on ancillary equipment, especially in coastal areas where salt aggravates atmospheric corrosion.
The new range of Duragalv™ coating options - 70, 100 and 140 allows selection of an appropriate steel protection system to meet the different categories of atmospheric corrosivity across the UK.
These 5 categories are defined on the Galvanizer’s association Zinc Millennium Map of atmospheric corrosivity. The Millennium Map incorporates data issued by MAFF (ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food), another source for evaluating climatic/atmospheric agents cited in BS 7543:2003, section A.6.3.
DURAGALV™ 70
All of our steel products are hot dip galvanised, in house, after manufacture to Dura Galv 70 finish to BS EN ISO 1461:1999 as standard.
DURAGALV™ 100
Dura Galv 100 a superior galvanising finish tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 1461:1999 but with an increased thickness of 100 (minimum) micron zinc coating thickness, for longevity in harsh and aggressive environments.
DURAGALV™ 140
Duragalv 140 is a new high grade of post-galvanising, providing a minimum 140 microns protective zinc coating. This is double the compliance level of the galvanising standard BS EN ISO 1461, which, dependent upon base material thickness, requires a minimum 70 microns coating.
Duragalv 140 assures long product performance to meet the more demanding design life criteria of sustainable design. It also extends product life for applications in areas of high atmospheric corrosivity (categories 4 and 5), as defined on the Galvanizers’ Association UK Zinc Millennium map.
Notably, Duragalv 140 has also been specified on Technorail staging units being installed as part of on-going refurbishment on the West Coast main line.
Why Duragalv?
The Duragalv® process is more flexible and sophiscated than the previous Ultra-Galv™ 2000. Ultra-Galv™2000 achieved a maximum 2000 gsm coating on steel, but wthout the progressive coating thicknesses now available with the Duragalv® family, only possible by the contolled inhouse galvanising processes.
More Economical In-house Galvanising
Duragalv® now enables the specifier to determine the thickness required for all areas in the UK - therefore specifying more controllable and a more economical range of coatings.
Guarantees
The Duragalv® new generation of post-galvanising is backed by distinctive product labels, showing tested and guaranteed coating thickness to comply with the galvanizing standard BS EN ISO 1461: 1999.
